Canopic Jars

Updated: May 25, 2023

Inspired by the Egyptian Collection at the Brooklyn Museum, this project aims to unravel the enigma concealed within the Canopic Jars associated with burial practices in ancient Egypt. Four Canopic Jars have been crafted, allowing individuals to uncover the secrets held within.

To enhance people's understanding of Egyptian Canopic Jars, I have created a set of jars that closely resemble the authentic ones, making these objects accessible to the public. I am particularly passionate about establishing an interactive museum where viewers can physically engage with the artifacts. I firmly believe that a hands-on experience can facilitate learning and enhance the viewers' recollection of the artwork.

The Egyptians held a profound reverence for their deceased, employing meticulous techniques to mummify them. Among the rituals of mummification, one crucial step involved removing the organs from the deceased and desiccating them with salt, anointing them with oils, and wrapping them in linen before placing them into Canopic Jars. These jars safeguarded the organs deemed vital for the afterlife, ensuring their protection in the realm beyond. Each stage of the mummification process played a pivotal role in an Egyptian's journey to the afterlife. A successful mummification guaranteed their eternal existence. Remarkably, at times, the preservation of internal organs garnered greater attention than the preservation of the actual body.
